I know what you’re going to say, “oh there’s bragierrnot again, trying to pepper in some mental health essays into his raunchy-ass tumblr” … and you’re not wrong, but isn’t learning just as fun as gaping buttholes? ;-)
A new follower reached out to me and disclosed that he to had been diagnosed with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). For those not familiar, in short it’s a disorder almost defined by complete instability – specifically with regards to relationships, sense of worth and all around unstable emotions. They often fear abandonment (depression), are prone to substance abuse and can be self destructive. Anyone that has been following my blog since it’s conception knows that I follow very close under this category.
An Alarming Co-Oocurence on the Dance-Floor
The reason worth educating on these disorders is because there’s an alarming co-occurence with Cluster B disorders (1. BPD, 2. Narcissistic Personality Disorder 3. Histrionic Personality Disorder and 4. Antisocial Personality Disorder) with specifically gay men.
Any social function is a great example of this… take for example any dance floor at a popular gay nightclub.
You’ll most certainly have someone who lives to be the center of attention, that needs to be attracted by others. They’ll almost certainly reject any man outright because validation is more important to them than any actual connection. Those people are closer to being histrionic and exhibiting narcissistic behavior. We all know these types as the ones that need to take selfies with others, tag themselves at various places and have an exhausting need to showcase their social ability with a side of vanity.
There’s another type on the dance floor, which is someone on the brim, in the outskirts that is antisocial. They’d rather not be there, but at the same time they feel this arduous need to force themselves to go out.
Someone with Borderline is a more difficult read unless it’s coupled with these other disorders. I personally can have an evening where I feel an immense sense of worth and tend to lead the entire group, and other times where I’m standoffish and would rather go unnoticed.
They are also way morely to be in a relationship as it’s easier just to follow and be receptive to someone else decisions. It’s no surprise that more submissives could categories under this disorder and it poses it’s own risks.
Getting To My Point
As someone that spends all day studying these sort of things, it can be exhausting to go out to a bar and see these types in their environment. There’s so man that are textbook examples of these disorders and don’t know it.
So why does it matter? It matters because with mood disorders, and more specifically personality disorders, treatment can make a world of difference for the person. A common thread with all these is how exhausting your behavior can be, and how frustrating that is when you can’t stop it. Therapy alone can make a WORLD of difference for these. I go to a gay specific clinic here in DC and there’s enough of a need for mood specific therapy (CBT, DBT) that there’s daily gay and lesbian groups that can fill a room for this very reason.
It never can hurt to evaluate your personal issues and see if you may fit under one of these categories. After all, there’s nothing hotter than taking care of oneself.
